Join us to learn how YOU and your Division can harness the power of iTunes U(niversity) to distribute existing resources to the field and to the world. NCDPI and other partners have joined forces to create a space in iTunes U specifically for North Carolina instructional resources. Now, your class can always be in session. What is iTunes U? It is an impressive collection of free educational media available online. iTunes U includes over 175,000 educational audio and video files, including presentations, performances, lectures, demonstrations, debates, tours, conference materials, lesson plan ideas, PDFs, and archival footage from education institutions throughout the country. Already, more than half of the nation's top 500 schools use iTunes U to distribute digital content. In fact, every course offered at MIT is offered as a free download in iTunes U. Imagine that. This tool is transforming the way people learn on campus, off campus, and where there's no campus at all.
If you have questions, please contact Ouida Myers, omyers@dpi.state.nc.us or Donna Sawyer, dsawyer@dpi.state.nc.us.
Participants should already be able to demonstrate introductory knowledge and skills in technology operations and concepts. |

Now, let's take a few minutes to learn about iTunes U(niversity) and to think about the possibilities for using it as a communication tool in the 21st Century. You may think of iTunes as a tool for listening to music, but there's far more there than meets the eye. iTunes U includes over 175,000 educational audio and video files, including presentations, performances, lectures, demonstrations, debates, tours, conference materials, lesson plan ideas, PDFs, and archival footage from education institutions throughout the country.
Activity 1: Take a look at how other state agencies use iTunes U and imagine the possibilities for disseminating the work you do here in North Carolina.

Activity 2: iTunes U(niversity) is housed inside the larger iTunes application, so let's look around the iTunes application before we go inside the area known as iTunes U. Think of this activity as walking around the lawn and in the front door of the Biltmore Estate (The complete iTunes application). Think of iTunes U as a set of rooms for us to explore inside the Biltmore Estate. Let's go for a visit now.

Activity 3: Now that you're inside the Biltmore Estate, excuse me, iTunes, let's walk on over to iTunes U.

http://www.apple.com/itunes/do...
Macintosh Users: You already have the iTunes application. Go find it on your computer. It should be sitting in the Applications folder. If, for some reason, you do not have iTunes, go to this link and download the most recent version.
http://www.apple.com/itunes/do...
Activity 2:
a. Open the iTunes application on your computer.
b. Click on the iTunes STORE in the left margin. (Why not resize your windows so that you can see this information in one window while viewing iTunes in another part of your screen.)
b. Next, click iTunes U, which is slightly to the right of the iTunes Store link.
c. Now, look down in the same column and find K-12. It is in the box labeled FIND EDUCATION PROVIDERS.
d. You should see a list of K-12 institutions.
e. We suggest that you start with the Virginia Department of Education. They have a good model. |

Please share this information with your coworkers and gather feedback on the products that currently exist in your department. What would you like to offer to North Carolina educators and to the world in iTunes U? It is important that you input your list of instructional products using the link shown below. We will contact you shortly to obtain the materials and to begin the process of making them available in iTunes. That's all there is to it.
Activity 1: Submit a list of resources your area would like to contribute to iTunes U. This is an invitation to become a content provider by making your department's current audio, video or other resources available on the North Carolina portal as well as your own Web sites, which can be linked to iTunes U. We hope you will accept this invitation and participate in North Carolina on iTunes U. We look forward to working with you to create a rich repository of high quality content.
IMPORTANT NOTE: You must click the SUBMIT button when you're done listing available resources. You may wish to meet with your co-workers first, and then submit your list together using this link. But please do not wait any longer than a week. We have a deadline to meet. (Record your eBistro login and password now. You will need it later.)

Activity 2: These resources must be of high quality and professional development resources must follow best practices for adult learning. It is important to understand that the North Carolina Portal on iTunes U is not intended simply to duplicate the vast amount of resources already available, but to create a unique collection of high quality resources that address the education priorities and needs in North Carolina.
Virginia has given us permission to use their document on "Providing Content for Virginia" as a model. Please open this PDF and examine the rubrics and copyright information to evaluate your content contributions. (This PDF will be added at a later date.) |
