Want to learn how to develop WebQuests that will provide an authentic environment for problem solving, information processing, and collaboration? In this module, participants will review the basics of WebQuests and create a WebQuest to use in their classroom.
A rubric has been included to help guide you through the collection of all the artifacts you will need to share as evidence of completing the module. Also, the rubric is an assessment tool to be used by the designated personnel in your school district to whom you will submit your completed work for CEU credit.
It is recommended that you go through “A Quest for WebQuest Basics Module” - http://ebistro.org/modules/mod... as a prerequisite to this module.

Designed to engage students in thinking levels of analysis, synthesis and evaluation, this inquiry oriented activity is designed to bring the Internet into the classroom in an innovative and safe way.
The WebQuest model was developed by Bernie Dodge in 1995 at the San Diego State University and has been proven to be "an effective way to bring together instructional practices into one integrated student activity." (Schrock)
To get some background information about how to use WebQuests effectively, look at a PowerPoint developed by Kathy Schrock that hightlights several articles written by Bernie Dodge.
b>“WebQuests in Our Future: The Teacher’s Role in Cyberspace” at
http://kathyschrock.net/slides...
Record the two types of WebQuests, the critical attributes of a WebQuest, and strategies that can increase motivation in students.
Look at several different WebQuest examples that highlight each of the different WebQuest components at “Building Blocks of a WebQuest” - http://projects.edtech.sandi.n...
Record on the Building Blocks of a WebQuest Handout an example of a WebQuest that you think best highlights each of the different WebQuest components. Make sure you include the name of the WebQuest you selected for each component and the Web address for future reference.

Activity 1. Download “A Rubric for Evaluating WebQuests” at http://webquest.sdsu.edu/webqu... and evaluate a WebQuest.
You can evaluate one of the WebQuest that you recorded on the Building Blocks of a WebQuest Handout or one from the examples below. If you give a score less than the highest possible score, be ready to discuss why you gave less than a perfect score for each WebQuest component.
Best WebQuests on the Web http://eduscapes.com/tap/topic...
This activity will provide you with the experience of using the rubric to evaluate a WebQuest, as well as give you the opportunity to get ideas from a WebQuest.
Activity 2. Decide on goals and objectives that you would like to address in your WebQuest. Open the WebQuest Template, then go to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NC SCOS) - http://www.ncpublicschools.org..., and copy and paste or type your goals and objectives in the Teachers Notes - Curriculum Standards section of the WebQuest Template.
Activity 3. Review tips for better searching in the online article, “Four Nets for Better Searching.” found at http://webquest.sdsu.edu/searc... This will help you and your students develop better searching strategies.
Next, search for Internet resources and include any other resources you many want to include such as books or videos. List all the resources in your WebQuest Template.
Activity 4. Now that you have resources for your WebQuest, it’s time to begin developing your WebQuest. The Task is one of the most important components of the WebQuest since it provides the focus.
Go to the “WebQuest Taskonomy: A Taxonomy of Tasks” at http://webquest.sdsu.edu/tasko... and read through the various types of tasks. You will notice that the WebQuest Taskonomy includes tips and lots of WebQuest examples that hightlight a specific task.
Next, you will need to decide on the type of task you will use in your WebQuest. Write your task in the WebQuest Template and include the type of task in the Teacher's Notes section.
Print a copy of “Choosing a WebQuest Topic and Task” at http://webquest.sdsu.edu/topic... and use it to evaluate your task.
Activity 5. In The Process component you explain what the students will do to accomplish the task(s). This section will include links to any resource that will help students accomplish the task.
Print the “Process Checklist” at http://projects.edtech.sandi.n... to evaluate your Process.
Activity 6. It is time to spark the interest of your students. Your Introduction should highlight elements of the task and capture the attention of your students. Your Introduction should “hook” the students by including elements of interest or intrigue. Write your Introduction on your WebQuest template.
Activity 7. The purpose of the Evaulation component of a WebQuest is to provide an authentic assessment, a tool that will require students to demonstrate skills and competencies that represent real life problems and situations.
Read the article entitled, “Incorporating Authentic Assessment” - http://www.park.edu/cetl/quick... to get background information before developing your own rubric.
Go to Rubistar - http://rubistar.4teachers.org/... and develop a rubric or use another tool to create your evaluation rubric. Then include the rubric in the WebQuest Template.
Activity 8. Your Conclusion is a summary of student efforts throughout the WebQuest and should reinforce their ability to surmount the challenges they faced in the WebQuest. The Conclusion can serve to help students realize what they have learned, and how they have grown from the WebQuest experience.
The Conclusion gives students an opportunity to process their experience and finish with a sense of closure. Think about what you want to include in your Conclusion and add the information to the WebQuest Template.

Take a few minutes to reflect on the following questions:
1. How will this WebQuest enhance your teaching of the specific goals and objectives that you have identified?
2. How do you plan to integrate this WebQuest into your curriculum and the classroom?
3. What modifications would you need to make to address different learning styles and differentiation of instruction?

Go to the NC Standard Course of Study at http://www.ncpublicschools.org...,
Brainstorm a list of at least 2 goals and objectives for one or more of the following to create additional WebQuests:
• areas of your curriculum you find difficult to teach.
• areas that your students have had trouble learning.
• areas that fall short of state or local educational standards.
• areas of education that can be adequately researched using the Internet.
